7 Tips For Feeling More Confident In Front Of The Camera
You may feel hesitant to get in front of the camera because you lack experience or think you’re just not photogenic enough. Well, we disagree.
At S&S Studios, we don’t want to just photograph models. We aim to capture real people, regardless of shape, size, color, or experience. However, we’ll admit: taking photos of yourself can be super awkward, unnatural, and uncomfortable. It can even make you feel insecure, self-conscious, or vulnerable. If you feel this way before a photo shoot, it’s okay—it does not mean you shouldn’t have your time in the spotlight. It takes time and practice to feel confident and comfortable in front of a camera, and we want to help you get there.
Here are some tips and tricks for feeling more camera-ready!
Get to know your photographer.
Posing in front of a camera can be extra awkward if you don’t know the person behind it. It will feel much less intimidating to be a subject when you’re comfortable and familiar with your photographer! We recommend chatting with your photographer before your shoot, reading their blog posts, checking out their social media accounts, and looking through their previous work. Seeing your photographer as your friend rather than a scary camera lens will make the process much easier!
2. Pretend you are alone in your bedroom.
This trick is as old as time! Just as you imagine your audience in their underwear while on stage, try pretending that you are just alone in your bedroom while being photographed. We have all struck our most fabulous poses in front of our bedroom mirror, so ignore the rest of the world and break them out! While this technique may take some time to master, it will definitely help melt your nerves and stage fright.
3. Wear an outfit that makes you feel confident.
Confidence is a mindset. If you wear an outfit that makes you feel good on the outside, you’ll feel good on the inside. Break out your favorite look and your confidence and comfortability in front of the camera will be naturally boosted!
4. Hold a prop.
I’ll admit…when I am taking a photo of myself, I have no idea what to do with my hands! My arms usually end up falling awkwardly to my side or being crossed over my chest. If you struggle with this as well, using props will definitely help you. Holding a prop will allow more natural poses and prevent stiffness. Try a bouquet of flowers, a musical instrument, baby clothes, balloons, sports equipment, mugs, or anything else that you feel represents you!
5. Move around.
In addition to props, moving around will also prevent stiffness and awkwardness. Sometimes a pose can appear a bit too staged or rigid. Organic movement and flow will create a more natural photograph. Try walking, throwing your head back with laughter, or swinging your arms.
6. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
If you lack experience in front of a camera, don’t feel hesitant to ask your photographer for some assistance. You can ask questions such as: what are my best angles? How should I pose? Where is the best lighting? How should I do my hair? Your photographer is working for you! They not only have tons of knowledge to put to use, but want to create the best product for you.
7. Practice, practice, practice!
You’ve heard it before: practice makes perfect! If you frequently take photos of yourself, it will feel more comfortable and normal each time. Eventually, being in front of a camera will feel like second nature. You will soon realize that your beauty deserves to be captured!
